Mapping and monitoring of the exotic weevil, Metamasius callizona, and its host plants (some of south Florida's native bromeliads) began in Myakka River State Park in January 2001. For a summary of this research project, see the Introduction. In April 2002 mapping and monitoring expanded to Loxahatchee National wildlife Refuge (LWNR) and is being conducted by volunteers. In August 2002, a volunteer station was set up in Highlands Hammock State Park (HHSP). For a summary of volunteer activity, see The Weevil Watchers. |
