The Mexican bromeliad weevil, Metamasius callizona, first became established in Florida in the late 1980's in Broward County and has since moved to an additional 16 counties. It has been found in the following places in Florida:

Brevard County:
November 1998: Valkaria
January 1999: Floridana Beach

Broward County:
November 1989: Ft. Lauderdale; central and northern parts of the county
Late 1990: Hidden Forest
February 1991: Oak Tree Country Club; Easterlin Park; Secret Woods Nature Center; Tree Tops Park; Trade Winds Park; County Parks Headquarters; Boca West

Charlotte County:
August 1994: eastern part of the county, 2 miles south of northern border
July 1996: western part of the county

Collier County:
March 1996: Immokalee
March-April 1999: North Naples; Sunniland
January 2002: Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary
March 2002: Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park

DeSoto County:
March 1999: Arcadia

Glades County:
March 1996: Palmdale

Hendry County:
August 1997: LaBelle

Highlands County:
March 1999: Highlands Hammock State Park, Sebring

Indian River County:
December 1998: Dale Wimbrow Park on the Sebastian River
March 1999: Donald MacDonald Park on the Sebastian River
July 2000: Oslo Road area

Lee County:
October 1990: North Ft. Myers
1990-1993: northwest parts of the county, along the Orange River; Ft. Myers
August 1998: Shady Oaks Park, Ft. Myers
June 1999: Koreshan State Historic Site

Manatee County:
March 1999: Ceia Island; 2 miles west of Lake Manatee State Recreation Area; Ellenton

Martin County:
May 1997: Palm City

Miami-Dade County:
May 1991: Castellow Hammock, Goulds
The weevil has not been found in Castellow Hammock or other parts of Miami-Dade County since before Hurricane Andrew.

Okeechobee County:
April 2002: SW 3rd Ave., Okeechobee

Palm Beach County:
November 1989: southern parts of the county
July 1993: northwest of West Palm Beach Airport
March 1999: Loxahatchee Riverbend Park; Frenchman's Creek Country Club; Loxahatchee County Park
February 2001: Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, Boynton Beach

Polk County:
December 2000: Lake Kissimmee State Park

St. Lucie County:
November 1995: Ft. Pierce
October 1998: Trowbridge Road, near Highway 68
December 1998: Savannas Preserve State Park; St. Lucie River at Port St. Lucie
March 1999: St. Lucie River at Prima Vista Boulevard, Port St. Lucie
July 2000: Indrio Road area

Sarasota County:
August 1996: southern part of the county
September 1996: Marie Selby Botanical Gardens
March 1999: on Myakka River, just south of I-75
November 1999: Longboat Key
